Inspired by the legendary techniques of Nick Agar, this course is for the turner who wants to move beyond the natural grain and explore the world of narrative turning. The “Viking Sunset” is more than a bowl; it’s a study in texture, atmospheric color, and the interplay between light and shadow. You will learn to transform a simple Maple blank into a dramatic piece that evokes the burning oranges and deep silhouettes of a Nordic sunset.
The Masterclass Curriculum
- The Canvas (The “Thin-Rim” Turn): We begin by turning a wide, thin-rimmed bowl. We’ll focus on creating a crisp “bead” or border that separates the internal natural wood from the external artistic “sunset” rim.
- Texturing the Landscape: Using specialized power carving and texturing tools (provided), you will learn to “distress” the rim of the bowl to create a texture reminiscent of rugged coastlines or crashing waves.
- The Sunset Palette: This is where the magic happens. We’ll use a combination of spirit-based dyes and professional airbrushing techniques to layer colors. You’ll learn how to “blend” hues from a fiery sun-yellow into deep, moody violets and blacks.
- Gilding & Contrast: To finish, we’ll use specialized iridescent waxes or metallic highlights to catch the “sunlight” on the high points of your texture, creating a 3D effect that changes as you walk around the room.

Professional Studio Equipment Provided
This course requires specialized gear. I will provide all the necessary professional equipment for the session, including:
- High-end Airbrushes, you supply a normal household compressor.
- Texturing Tools.
- Professional Waterbased Dyes and Coloured waxes.
What to Bring
- The Wood: Each student must supply one piece of Maple (25x25x6cm). As with our other artistic courses, Maple is the mandatory choice here because its light, uniform “canvas” is essential for the airbrushing to remain vibrant.
- Note: If you need me to source the wood, I can provide a premium-grade Maple blank for you at cost. Please ensure you request this when booking.
