A bowl is more than just a vessel; it is a canvas. In this intensive group session, we bridge the gap between foundational wood-turning and contemporary surface design. We begin with the disciplined physics of the cut and end with a piece that challenges the viewer’s perception of wood.
Part 1: The Perfect Foundation
Before we play with color, we must master the form. We will spend the first half of the day ensuring your technical “bones” are rock solid:
- The Sharp Edge: We start at the grinder. You’ll learn how a specific grind on your bowl gouge dictates the fluid movement of your shavings.
- Safety & Security: Advanced mounting techniques to ensure your 25cm Maple blank stays exactly where it belongs.
- The Geometry of Beauty: We discuss proportions—understanding the “foot,” the “curve,” and the “rim”—to ensure your bowl feels as good in the hand as it looks on the shelf.
- The “Pure Cut”: A deep dive into tool control. We focus on eliminating “tool marks” at the source, reducing your sanding time by half through superior cutting technique.
- Up to 7 students in one class.
Part 2: Surface Transformation
Once we have achieved a clean, elegant form, we break the rules. This is where your personality enters the wood:
- Tactile Texturing: I will provide professional texturing tools to teach you how to create patterns, ripples, and carved effects that catch the light.
- Light & Shadow: We explore how to use contrast to make your textures “pop.”
- The Alchemist’s Bench: Using my personal collection of professional pigments and dyes, you will learn to apply color without obscuring the natural soul of the Maple. We’ll focus on blending, layering, and “back-sanding” to highlight the grain.

What to Bring
- The Wood: Each student should bring one piece of Maple (25x25x6cm). Maple is the perfect “white canvas” for this course due to its tight grain and light color.
- Don’t have the wood? No problem. I can supply a premium kiln-dried Maple blank for you at cost—just let me know in advance.
- The Spirit: Bring your curiosity. All texturing tools, specialized pigments, and finishing oils are provided.
