Craft the world’s best grinder, from the inside out.
A high-quality salt and pepper mill is perhaps the most rewarding project a woodturner can undertake. In this workshop, we move beyond simple aesthetics and dive into the world of precision engineering in wood. We will be using the world-renowned Danish CrushGrind® mechanisms—celebrated for their ceramic durability and adjustable coarseness.
What We Will Master
- Timber Selection & Grain Matching: We’ll start by preparing your blanks. You’ll learn how to “read” the grain so that the pattern flows seamlessly from the body to the top of your mill.
- The Science of the Bore: Success with CrushGrind® is all about the internal measurements. I’ll guide you through the specific sequence of drilling and “stepping” the interior diameters to ensure a perfect, friction-fit seat for the mechanism.
- Sculpting the Silhouette: This is where your creativity takes over. Whether you prefer a sleek, minimalist Scandinavian cylinder or a classic ergonomic curve, we’ll focus on tool control to achieve a finish that requires minimal sanding.
- The Final Detail: We’ll explore the best hard-wearing finishes for kitchen use. For those feeling adventurous, I will demonstrate how to use accent colors or “burn lines” to distinguish between your salt and pepper pair.
- Session price 405 Euro
- Up to 7 students in one class.

Efficiency & Production
This is a high-yield workshop! My goal is for every student to master the workflow well enough to produce two finished mills during the session. You’ll leave not just with a new skill, but with a stunning matched set for your home or as a truly exceptional gift.
What to Bring
- The Wood: Please bring two pieces of hardwood (Oak, Ash, Walnut, etc.), sized 6x6x22cm.
- The Hardware: You will need two CrushGrind® 135mm inserts.
- Note: If you don’t have these ready, don’t worry—I stock premium kiln-dried blanks and genuine CrushGrind® mechanisms which I can provide at cost. Just send me a message before the course.
Instructor’s Note: “The beauty of the CrushGrind® system is that there are no visible screws or plastic parts on the exterior. It’s pure wood and pure engineering. Once you’ve turned your first mill and felt that mechanism click into place, you’ll be hooked.”
